for me the single most over-rated song/jam by the Grateful Dead is the Scarlet>Fire from 10-14-1994...it's not even the best S>F of that month (10-01-1994 is better)...it's long and rambling. Garcia is disjointed, blows lyrics (of course) and the drummers sound like they're buying time...

Remember the huge hype right after the tour about the SF from MSG? I was disappointed when I finally did hear it on Dead Hour...yes, there are a few nice moments...and yes i have listened to it multiple times...but it's not even close to my S>F top 10...

Most overrated? I don't have an opinion about specific versions of anything, but I will mention the detriment a lot of people around here attribute to Donna Jean Godchaux's voice.

Donnas shittiness is not overrated. Pigpen was a lot to the band. He brought the whole blues aspect, and kept them, well straight you could say. Without Pig the dead would have done only crazy psychedelic stuff like their acid tests.

the reason why is Donna is horrible is because her voice was at her worst in those first couple years, which so happen to best years for the band. I mean think about just how much better those early Playin and Scarlets would be without her. She got better in 77-78 and I actually dont mind her then

donna's voice sounds hot when she sings. Just listen to like... a really early BIODTL, OR GDTRFB.. listen to her voice on 8/27/ 72 (minus that playin' =P)

I'm gonna get slammed for this, I know it. But to me, one of the most overrated GD shows--recommended by scores of LMA forum members, and please! I love and respect you all!!!! ;-) so be kind .....

....is MSG 3-9-81

I keep trying to hear what's so great about this oft recommended show, and maybe it's just the fact that it's an AUD and i'm having trouble hearing the great sound, but....well, it's not that it's a BAD show--but the hype surrounding it just doesn't get to me the same as others. Everyone says the ChinaRider is like the best ever and I can point to many many others I like better, esp. from '74 (2/24/74 my fave) and even some others from similar years to '81, like the 11/24/79...dunno, it's in the ear of the beholder, I guess.

Also, that Deer Creek show from '85 w/a Row Jimmy that blows which many people have said is their favorite. Don't get that at all. If it was any more botched lyrically or slowly played it would die in my CD player.

Hi Grendel - it does feel a bit odd when you find yourself completely out of step with everyone else. Same thing happened to me with 10/27/79 - no matter how hard I tried I just could not get that show, and yet Dr Flashback rated it one of the top five of the year.

Rob, I am just about....................

Oh, shit, I'm too tired for this. Too bad we disagree, but i'm sure there are shows you are particular to that i would not get. Same with everyone here. I get rather upset when people start jumping on folks for liking or not liking certain shows or versions of songs, or how they write a review, or whatever. If you are doing it in jest, that's one thing, but I have read many things here that are most definitely more "agressive" than need be. Rob, I have nothing but the highest respect for you and your input, so we disagree on a show? Big friggin' deal. And do I hold the fact that you are a Scot against you, even though I probably should? Nope. Not yet anyway, the day is young.

SDH - I am just about ... too.

If I had addressed the post to you I could (maybe) see your point in getting uppity. However, I was responding to Grendel's post and saying no more than that I had shared his experience of being out of step with everyone else. No more than that. I made no further comment about the Cape Cod show beyond saying 'everyone likes it - I don't'. So, back off, brother.

Shit, this wasn't a result of anything you wrote, sorry if it came across that way. I was reading some posts on the "Virgin Head" thread that were less than positive regarding a young dudes reviews and it got my blood up. I have never thought that anything you wrote was unduly aggressive.

This is exactly what I'm talking about. I saw the woman with the band a number of times. It's how I cut my teeth on the Dead, and never once did I walk away from a show thinking, "They would be so much better if only they dumped her." I thought quite the opposite of her, actually. But people constantly rail on her in this forum as if she had stolen their birthright. On the other hand, Jerry hired her to work in his own band after working alongside her in the Dead, and I don't recall reading a surplus of commentary here about his lack of good musical judgement. To talk of her "shittiness" is just plain ugly, and discussions thereof take up way too much space here. She's a nice lady. Stop being so mean and leave her alone.

A lot of wha Donna struggled with was not being able to hear herself while on stage.

I agree that even though there are some cringe-inducing examples of harmonies that just do't sound right on some songs, she doesn't take anything away from the scores of great shows they played during her tenure.

For a far better example of how GOOD she could sound, check out the studio version of "The way you do the things you do" that was included as an outtake from a previous Garcia release--it can be found on the 5-disc Garcia retrospective set that was released a few years back.

Also, as mentioned, some of the Garcia Band shows released on the Pure Jerry label...she sounds especially great on "Stir it Up" from the 1977 JGB show released not long ago.

Boy, I can't wait until we can finally get our All Good Things box out of hock. My wife also had to pawn the Dylan box that day to raise bail money. Horrible story: it was reasonably warm, so I decided to walk to work, and a cop was lying in wait right around the corner to pick me up on a failure to appear warrant that had been issued. I had missed a court date, an appearance scheduled because of a ticket I was given when my dog, Ratdog, got loose and was thrown in the hoosegow. They threw me in the jailhouse, but she did get me out before the sun went down.

Overrated year: 85, although I enjoy it a lot.
overrated shows: 12-31-78 & 10-9-89, although if I had been to either one, I doubt I would be writing this now.
overrated song versions: 11-1-79 S>f, but I will go re-listen to it again soon. Things can change after time.
I have to include the dark star from 8-27-72 show. Again, haven't listened to it in a few years.

I'm wrapping myself in a thermal blanket. The kind firefighters use when they are trapped by the flames....

Pigpen.

May the pummelation commence!

P.S. - I love the Pig. But, his overall contribution to the long history of this band has been overstated. His rank among GD players and writers is actually somewhere between Barlow and Vince.

1. Garcia
2. Weir
3. Lesh
4. Hunter
5. Barlow
6. Drummers
7. Pig
8. Keith
9. Brent
10.Donna
11.Bruce
12.Vince

Ratings based on overall impact on the entire history of the band. Seriously, any arguments?

It's kind of brutal for Pig, I know. In many ways he IS GD. But, when you start to pull-back and take song-writing and longevity into account....it is what it is. I believe.

Bob: Hey guy's, I've got some new songs.
Phil: These are great, who wrote 'em?
Bob: Well...I had this mean pimple on my ass, and just as I was sqeezin' I heard..."wait, I write songs!".

The rest, as they say, is history.

Crazy Fingers Dean Smilh center 1993. Many reviews on the site claim "best ever". it's good but far from the best. Also, the setlist mentions Fingers>jam. The jam is actually a Playing in the Band jam. My opinion, tons of other fingers better than that one.

6-26-94 so many roads and peggy-o.when folks talk about so many roads they always mention this one and i just don't get it,jerry's tired and his guitar work lacks the notes that make this song work, also the peggy-o everyone raves about, sorry but pick just about any peggy-o from 77 and you'll hear what i mean, actually pick the worst peggy-o from 1977 and you'll still hear what i mean.

let me add these last ones based on tiger's comments.

The So many Roads and balck Muddy River from the last show. I have an aud recording and Jerry struggles through both. he's out of key, his vocie cracks. it is 2 of the toughest perfomances I ever heard. Yet people say they cry, or are moved by these versions. Don't see it frankly, but hey they can have it

cmon tiger - even some of the late peggy's were great - werethey as technically proficient as 77?? no - but that tune just don't have to be - peggy is just so soulful and sad - it can be great even when the singer is soulful and sad (not junked out i'll agree though)

(not a fan of so many roads though - i'll take Lazy River Road any day)
